A worn or hardened ring allows abrasive material to enter the bearing, accelerating wear and causing shaft scoring. The original manufacturer specifies the felt density and thickness to maintain a controlled interference fit against the shaft surface without excessive drag. On reinstallation, ensure the ring is fully seated in its groove and that the shaft surface is clean of debris.
