This engine oil filter insert removes particulate contamination from the engine lubricating oil before it reaches the bearing surfaces and oil galleries. It is installed in the filter housing on the engine block; the element traps wear debris and combustion byproducts that would otherwise circulate through the main and connecting-rod bearings. A restricted element reduces oil flow, which can lead to elevated oil temperature and accelerated bearing wear. The original manufacturer specifies the filtration media and bypass-valve cracking pressure that match the engine's lubrication circuit, so the filter maintains proper oil pressure under cold-start and high-load conditions. On replacement, clean the housing sealing surface and lubricate the new gasket before tightening the housing cap to the specified torque.
