This ball joint connects the steering linkage to the axle assembly, allowing the wheel hub to pivot as the steering system moves. It sits at the interface between the tie rod and the steering knuckle, transmitting lateral force while accommodating angular movement. Wear in the ball joint produces free play that causes wandering steering and uneven tire contact with the ground. The joint is sealed to retain lubrication and exclude contaminants during field operation. When replacing, tighten the retaining nut to the specified torque and check that the taper seats fully in the knuckle bore.
