This fuel filter element sits in the engine fuel system, between the tank and the injection pump. It removes particulate and water from the diesel before it reaches the high-pressure components. A restricted element forces the lift pump to work harder, and can cause a drop in rail pressure or erratic engine performance under load. The manufacturer designs the filter media to match the original housing's flow rate and micron rating, so the pressure drop across the element stays within the injection system's specification. On replacement, drain the water separator bowl and bleed the system according to the service manual.
