This engine oil filter removes particulate and combustion byproducts from the engine lubricating oil before it circulates through the bearing journals and cylinder walls. It mounts on the engine block and receives oil from the pump; the filter media traps debris while the bypass valve opens only when the element is fully loaded, ensuring oil flow continues even during a cold start or a clogged filter. A restricted filter causes the bypass valve to open, sending unfiltered oil to the engine, which accelerates wear on the crankshaft and connecting-rod bearings. The filter is built by Mann-Filter to match the original housing's thread and seal geometry, so the gasket seats correctly and the bypass valve cracks at the intended pressure differential. On reinstallation, lubricate the new gasket with clean engine oil and tighten the housing to the torque specified by the engine manufacturer.
