It is the primary-stage filter in a two-element assembly; the inner safety element (sold separately) provides backup filtration if the outer element is damaged during servicing. A clogged outer filter restricts airflow, causing increased intake vacuum and reduced engine power. The manufacturer machines the sealing surfaces to match the housing bore, ensuring the gasket seats correctly and unfiltered air cannot bypass the element. Replace the outer element at the interval specified for the engine, and always install a new inner element if the outer one has been breached.
