This ring is a locating and retaining component for the front axle assembly. It fits into a machined groove on the axle housing or shaft, preventing axial movement of adjacent bearings or gears. A worn or deformed ring allows end-play to develop in the axle assembly, which can lead to bearing misalignment and accelerated wear. The part is manufactured to the original dimensional specification so it seats fully in the groove without requiring shimming. On reinstallation, inspect the groove for burrs and ensure the ring is fully seated before the retaining components are torqued.
