This tension wheel guides and tensions the chain that drives the grain-unloading auger inside the combine's discharge tube. It is mounted on the tensioner arm, where its sprocket engages the chain loop to maintain proper slack and prevent skipping during high-volume grain transfer. A worn or seized tension wheel causes chain chatter, uneven auger speed, and increased wear on both the chain and the sprockets.
