A clogged filter forces the integral bypass valve open, allowing unfiltered oil to circulate, which increases the risk of scoring and reduces engine service life. The manufacturer specifies the filter's sealing interface geometry to match the housing bore, ensuring the bypass valve seats correctly and the gasket compresses evenly without leakage. On replacement, clean the mounting surface and lightly oil the new gasket before tightening to the specified torque.
