This O-ring seals the interface between the planetary gear housing and the axle assembly. It prevents lubricant leakage from the planetary gear cavity and blocks external contaminants from entering the gear set. A worn or hardened O-ring allows oil seepage past the joint, which can lead to reduced lubrication volume and eventual gear damage.
