Merlo 1 – ECU: Joystick Fault

Issue description

The system has detected a generic error within the joystick's operational system. This fault can manifest as a complete loss of joystick functions, delayed hydraulic response, or erratic machine movements. In some instances, the machine may not move at all while steering remains operational. The fault is often accompanied by a flashing icon on the control panel.

Applies to these machines

  • P38.10
  • P40.7
  • 40.7
  • P32.6 Plus
  • Turbofarmer P41.7
  • Panoramic P72.10
  • Various Roto models
  • P35.7
  • P37.7

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the joystick, wiring, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or pest nests under the wiring panel

  2. Inspect all related fuses and relays to ensure they are functional

  3. Verify that the machine's power supply is stable and check the battery condition

  4. Ensure all electrical plugs and connections are secure, particularly unplugging and reconnecting the SMU (Supervisory Management Unit) plug behind the seat

  5. Check the voltage at the bypass switch contacts, as a faulty switch can cause the joystick to become unresponsive

  6. Check the hydraulic system for debris in the shuttle valve within the valve block and verify load-sensing (LS) hydraulic pressure

Repair steps

  1. Confirm fault code details

Consult the machine's service manual for exact sub-code meanings (e.g., a 'JY01' code indicates an incoherence between the joystick's setpoint and its neutral position).

  2. Test electrical continuity

Use a multimeter to test the joystick's wiring for continuity and check for short circuits. Specifically look for a loose wire in the rocker switch's circuit board.

  3. Calibrate the joystick

Perform a joystick calibration using MerloDiag software or the MERlin diagnostic key, if applicable to your model.

  4. Repair mechanical or switch components

Inspect mechanical components like ball rod ends for wear and replace with standard M8 female, right-hand thread rod ends if necessary. Replace any malfunctioning push buttons or microswitches.

  5. Replace joystick assembly

If the joystick itself is determined to be faulty and cannot be repaired, replace the entire joystick assembly. This is often a simple swap-out process that may not require recalibration on some models.
