Merlo 1 – MD-CODER, ROTO MCSS, MERLIN: Open Circuit / Short Circuit / Defective Joystick
Issue description
The control system has detected an electrical fault within the joystick circuit. This condition can be caused by an open circuit (a break in the wiring), a short circuit (unintended connection between wires or to the machine's frame), or an internal failure of the joystick component itself. This fault directly affects the operation of the joystick and associated controls, typically resulting in a loss of joystick functionality.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Panoramic
- Turbofarmer
- Roto
- P26.6
Check the cause
Visually inspect the joystick's wiring for frayed wires, loose connections, or corrosion, paying special attention to the connectors at the joystick and the main harness
Ensure the joystick is receiving the correct voltage using a multimeter and the machine's wiring diagram
With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check for continuity in the joystick wiring to identify any open circuits, and check for short circuits between wires or to ground
If available, swap the joystick with a known-good unit to quickly determine if the joystick itself is the faulty component
Use a MerloDiag diagnostic tool to read live data from the joystick's sensors and pinpoint the specific nature of the electrical fault
Repair steps
Ensure machine safety
Park the machine on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine before beginning any repair work.
Repair wiring and connectors
If diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or connectors (open or short circuits), repair or replace the affected sections. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.
Replace joystick component
If the joystick is determined to be defective, disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting hardware, install the new joystick, and reconnect the electrical connector.
Calibrate new joystick
After replacing the joystick, calibrate it using the MerloDiag diagnostic software to ensure proper operation. For some models, a specific calibration procedure without a diagnostic tool might be possible.
Clear fault codes and test
Use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code from the control module's memory. Start the machine and test the joystick to verify it is functioning correctly.
