New Holland 10001 – Front Suspension: Front Suspension Solenoid Open or Shorted

Issue description

The Front Suspension control module has detected an electrical problem in the circuit for the 'Pump Not tank Valve' solenoid of the non-pumped front suspension reservoir. This indicates either an open circuit (a break in the wiring, a loose connector, or a failed internal coil) or a short circuit to ground (the power wire is making unintended contact with the chassis). This fault will likely result in the front suspension being inoperative or having limited functionality.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the front suspension control valve block for any signs of damage, such as chafing, cuts, or corrosion on the connectors

  2. Check the fuse panel for any blown fuses associated with the front suspension or auxiliary controllers

  3. Locate the 'Pump-Not-Tank' solenoid on the front suspension's main hydraulic valve block and safely disconnect the electrical connector

  4. Using a multimeter set to Ohms, measure the resistance across the two pins of the solenoid coil (a reading between 0 and 50 ohms is typical; infinity indicates an open circuit, near zero indicates a short circuit)

  5. With the connector disconnected, measure the resistance from each pin of the solenoid's wiring harness connector to a clean metal ground on the tractor's chassis to check for a short to ground

  6. If the wiring is confirmed to be intact, carefully apply a 12V power source to the solenoid's terminals to listen for an audible click, indicating mechanical actuation

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Ensure the tractor is on a level surface, the engine is off, and the parking brake is engaged. Depressurize the hydraulic system according to the operator's manual.

  2. Repair Wiring

If diagnostic checks reveal a damaged wire or connector, repair or replace the affected section of the harness. Ensure all connections are clean and secure.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

If the solenoid coil is found to be open or shorted, replace it by unscrewing the retaining nut, sliding the old coil off the valve stem, and installing the new one.

  4. Replace the Valve Assembly

If the solenoid is an integral part of a larger valve assembly, replace the entire unit.

  5. Clear Fault Codes

After the repair is complete, use the tractor's diagnostic interface or a compatible service tool to clear the fault code.

  6. Test Operation

Start the tractor and test the front suspension system to ensure it is functioning correctly. A calibration of the front suspension may be required after component replacement.
