New Holland 1003 – Hitch Controller / Electronic Draft Control (EDC): Open or Short to Ground raise hitch valve coil circuit failure
Issue description
The controller has detected a voltage or resistance irregularity in the electrical circuit that operates the solenoid responsible for raising the rear hitch. The circuit is either physically broken/disconnected (open) or a live wire is touching the chassis/ground (short to ground), preventing the hitch from raising.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear hitch control valve block at the back of the tractor for pinched, chafed, or broken wires.
Disconnect the electrical plug at the raise hitch solenoid and check for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins inside the connector.
Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the raise hitch valve coil (an 'OL' reading indicates an open/burnt out coil; 0 ohms to the chassis indicates an internal short to ground).
Test the wiring harness continuity from the Hitch ECU down to the solenoid connector to ensure there is no break in the wire and it is not shorted to the frame.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.
Locate the Valve
Locate the hitch control valve assembly at the rear of the tractor. Identify the specific solenoid coil responsible for the 'raise' function.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed or broken wire in the harness, cut out the damaged section and repair it using weatherproof heat-shrink butt connectors.
Replace the Solenoid Coil
If the coil itself failed the resistance test, disconnect its electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or clip holding the coil onto the hydraulic valve stem, slide the old coil off, slide the new OEM coil onto the stem, and secure it with the retaining nut/clip.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new coil.
Clear Codes and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest or the OEM CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the 1003 fault code. Perform a rear hitch calibration procedure to ensure the EDC module recognizes the full travel range of the hitch.
