New Holland 1004 – Hitch Controller (TCU / EDC module): Lower hitch valve coil short to 12 volts or lower hitch valve coil circuit failure

Issue description

The system has detected an electrical short to power (12V) or a general circuit failure in the solenoid coil responsible for lowering the rear three-point hitch.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series
  • New Holland TM Series (TM115, TM150, TM175)
  • New Holland T7 Series
  • New Holland T6 Series
  • New Holland TS Series
  • New Holland 40 Series (7740, 7840, 8240, 8340)

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the EDC valve block wiring harness for rubbed insulation, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could cause a short to 12V.

  2. Disconnect the lower hitch valve coil and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or loose connections.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the lower hitch valve coil. A dead short reading indicates the coil has failed internally.

  4. Check the continuity of the wiring from the valve coil connector back to the TCU/EDC module to rule out a harness failure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Valve

Locate the EDC draft control valve block at the rear linkage.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring.

  4. Replace the Coil/Valve

If the coil is internally shorted, remove the retaining nut and slide the faulty lower hitch valve coil off the valve cartridge. Replace it with a new coil. Note: On some older or heavily worn units, the entire EDC valve block or the internal plungers may need to be replaced or rebuilt if the solenoids are sticking.

  5. Reassemble and Reconnect

Secure the new coil, plug in the electrical connector, and reconnect the battery.

  6. EDC Valve Calibration

Whenever an EDC valve, coil, or microprocessor is replaced (or memory is reset), you must perform an EDC valve calibration via the tractor's dash diagnostic menu (e.g., Mode 12 features programming) or using a diagnostic tool like Jaltest so the system can relearn the valve's up/down displacement characteristics.
