New Holland 1009 – Hitch Controller (TCU): Low side of lower solenoid connected permanently to GND

Issue description

The ground-side control circuit (low side driver) for the hitch's lower solenoid valve is shorted to ground. Because the circuit is permanently grounded, the controller cannot properly regulate the electrical current to the solenoid, which compromises the tractor's ability to control the lowering function of the rear hitch.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the TCU to the lower hitch valve solenoid for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation where the wire might be making direct contact with the tractor chassis (ground).

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the lower hitch solenoid and turn the ignition ON. If the fault code changes from 1009 to an open circuit code (such as 1005 or 1063), the solenoid coil itself is internally shorted to its metal casing.

  3. With the battery disconnected, unplug the TCU harness and the lower hitch solenoid. Use a digital multimeter to check for continuity between the low-side control wire (at the solenoid connector) and a known good chassis ground. If there is continuity, the wiring harness is shorted to ground.

  4. If the wiring harness tests good (no short to ground) and the solenoid is not internally shorted, the low-side driver inside the TCU has likely failed (stuck closed to ground).

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface. Fully lower the rear hitch to relieve hydraulic pressure (or mechanically support it if it cannot be lowered). Turn off the engine and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Repair the Wiring

    If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the harness, locate the damaged section. Cut out the chafed wire, splice in a new section using weather-resistant heat-shrink butt connectors, and re-loom the harness to protect it from future rubbing.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

    If internally shorted, thoroughly clean the area around the hitch control valve block. Disconnect the electrical connector from the lower hitch solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or bolts securing the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the old solenoid off the cartridge stem. Install the new OEM solenoid coil, tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specified torque, and reconnect the wiring harness.

  4. Replace the TCU

    If the internal driver failed, remove the TCU and install a replacement. Note: Replacing the TCU or hitch components will usually require you to perform a Hydraulic Lift Autocalibration (often prompted by code 1024) using the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  5. Test the System

    Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes, and operate the hitch through its full range of motion to verify the repair.
