New Holland 1011 – Hitch Controller, Armrest Controller Module (ACM), or Instrument Cluster Panel (ICP): TCU (Tractor Controller Unit) is disconnected from the CAN bus.
Issue description
The machine's Controller Area Network (CAN bus) has lost communication with the TCU. The system is no longer receiving data packets from the TCU, which manages transmission and/or tractor control functions.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- New Holland T8 Series (e.g., T8.320, T8.350, T8.380, T8.410)
- New Holland T9 Series
- New Holland T6000 Series (T6010, T6020, T6030, T6040, T6050, T6060, T6070)
Check the cause
Check the CAN bus wiring between the TCU and the Armrest Controller for open circuits or short circuits to ground.
Inspect the multipole connectors at the TCU for pushed pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress.
Verify that the TCU is receiving proper 12-volt power and that the TCU housing clean ground (often designated as J9_TCU) is securely fastened and free of corrosion.
Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to ping the ACM, ICP, and TCU to isolate exactly where the CAN bus communication drops off.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the TCU
Locate the Tractor Controller Unit and disconnect the main wiring harness (e.g., the 34-pole UCM controller connector).
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the CAN lines, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.
Clean Grounds
Remove the M6 eyelet for the TCU housing clean ground, wire-brush the contact surface, and re-secure it.
Replace TCU (If Necessary)
If the wiring, power, and grounds are all intact but the TCU still will not communicate, the internal CAN transceiver in the TCU has likely failed. Remove the faulty TCU and install the replacement unit.
Programming and Calibration
If a new TCU is installed, connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). You must configure the new TCU (e.g., setting whether the tractor has an engine brake) and perform a ground speed calibration by entering the rear tire radius.
