New Holland 1018 – Hitch Controller (TMF / ATC): Hitch rockshaft position potentiometer open/short/misadjust or circuit failure

The signal from the hitch rockshaft position sensor is outside of its normal operating range, pointing to an electrical fault (open or shorted circuit), a failed potentiometer, or a mechanical misadjustment in the sensor's linkage.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the hitch rockshaft position potentiometer for damaged wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Verify that the mechanical linkage connecting the rockshaft to the potentiometer is intact, moves freely (360 degrees of mechanical travel), and is not bent or misadjusted.

   Using a multimeter, test the resistance of the potentiometer. It should measure 1000 ohms (± 10%) across pins A to C.

   Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically an 8V circuit for this specific potentiometer).

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the rockshaft position potentiometer at the rear hitch assembly.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed an open or short circuit in the harness, repair the damaged wiring or replace the connector pigtail.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the sensor failed the resistance test or is physically broken, unbolt the sensor bracket, disconnect the mechanical linkage, and unplug the electrical connector. Install the new potentiometer and reattach the linkage.

   Adjust the Sensor

   Ensure the sensor is mechanically adjusted so that its sweep falls within the normal operating range of the hitch's travel.

   Perform Autocalibration

   After replacing or adjusting the hitch potentiometer, you must perform a Hydraulic Lift Autocalibration (often associated with code 1024) so the Hitch Controller can learn the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage limits.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the stored fault codes from the TMF/Hitch controller and test the hitch operation.
