New Holland 1024 – Hitch Controller: ICU CAN data bus signal lost.

Issue description

The Hitch controller has lost communication with the Instrument Cluster Unit (ICU) over the Tractor Data Bus (TDB) / Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. The ICU is responsible for relaying critical information, such as wheel speed and optional true ground speed signals, to the Hitch controller. When this signal is interrupted, the hitch system cannot function properly.

Check the cause

  1. Check Fuses: Verify that the primary voltage supplies to the controllers are intact. Check for blown fuses on the 12VM, 12VF1, and 12VF3 circuits.

  2. Inspect CAN Bus Terminators: The CAN bus relies on terminating resistors to stabilize communication. On older models (like the TG series), active terminators located behind the back cover and in the engine bay are prone to broken solder joints where the pins meet the board.

  3. Test CAN Bus Resistance: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, one terminator is missing or faulty; if it reads out of limits, there is an open circuit.

  4. Wiring Harness Inspection: Check the wiring harness and connectors between the Hitch controller, the Armrest Control Unit, and the Instrument Cluster Unit (ICU) for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery before performing any electrical repairs to prevent short circuits.

  2. Repair/Replace Terminators

    If the diagnostic checks reveal a faulty CAN bus terminator (especially the older active terminators with broken solder joints), remove the faulty unit. Replace it with the updated, superseded passive CAN bus terminator plug (which contains two resistors).

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the CAN bus wiring is damaged, repair the open or shorted wires using OEM-approved splicing methods, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Check ICU Connections

    Disconnect and inspect the multi-pin connectors at the back of the Instrument Cluster Unit (ICU). Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reconnect them.

  5. Replace Faulty Modules (If Necessary)

    If the wiring, fuses, and terminators are all in good condition but the Hitch controller still cannot communicate with the ICU, the Instrument Cluster Unit itself (or the Hitch controller) may have suffered an internal failure and will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and perform a functional test of the hitch system to ensure communication is restored.
