New Holland 1028 – Hitch Controller / Electronic Draft Control (EDC) or Alta Implement (ATC): Travel Range potentiometer value received from CAN data bus indicates failure condition
Issue description
The system is detecting an abnormally high voltage signal from the travel range (lift arm position) potentiometer, which usually points to a damaged potentiometer, an open circuit, or a short to a positive voltage (+12V).

Check the cause
Check for companion code ARM 169, which indicates a configuration error if a potentiometer was connected to armrest connector J205 during calibration
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors (specifically armrest connector J205) for open circuits, chafed wires, or a short to +12V
Perform a resistance/voltage sweep test on the travel range potentiometer using a digital multimeter to check for dead spots or out-of-range values
Verify the CAN data bus communication lines between the Armrest Controller and the Hitch Controller are intact
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery before servicing electrical components to prevent further shorts.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to +12V or an open circuit in the harness between the potentiometer and the armrest controller, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.
Replace the Potentiometer
If the wiring is intact but the potentiometer failed the sweep test (or is physically damaged), remove the faulty travel range potentiometer from the lift arm/armrest assembly and install the new OEM replacement.
Hydraulic Lift Autocalibration
After replacing the part or fixing the wiring, you must perform a Hydraulic Lift Autocalibration (often associated with code 1024) to teach the controller the new minimum and maximum travel limits of the lift arm.
Clear Codes
Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible DTC eraser to clear the stored 1028 fault code from the module's EEPROM.
Parts you might need
(1)Electronic Lift Arm Position Potentiometer / Travel Range Potentiometer
Ensure the potentiometer matches the specific armrest configuration (e.g., tractors equipped with the travel limit feature vs. standard draft control).
