1035

New Holland 1035 – Hitch Controller: The Percent slip received from ETC indicates failure condition

Issue description

This code triggers when the Electronic Transmission Controller (ETC) calculates an invalid or impossible wheel slip percentage and sends this bad data over the CAN bus. This occurs if the theoretical ground speed (transmission output speed sensor) or actual true ground speed (radar speed sensor or GPS speed-out signal) inputs fail, or if CAN bus communication is corrupted.

Applies to these machines

  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.330
  • T8.360
  • T8.390
  • T8.420
  • T7 Series
  • T6 Series
  • TM Series
  • TS/TSA Series
  • TL Series
  • Magnum Series (235-340)
  • Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the radar speed sensor face to ensure it is not covered in thick mud, debris, or crop material blocking the radar signal.

  2. Check the radar sensor's wiring harness and 4-wire, 4-prong round plug for corrosion, moisture, or broken pins.

  3. If using a GPS monitor for ground speed instead of radar, verify the speed out adapter cable is securely plugged into the tractor's 3-pin or 4-pin radar harness connector.

  4. Test the transmission output speed sensor and its harness for damage, as a failing sensor will corrupt the theoretical ground speed calculation.

  5. Check for accompanying CAN data bus codes (such as Code 1032 Ground speed failure or Code 1034 Slip Enable switch failure) which might indicate a broader communication issue.

Repair steps

  1. Clean and Inspect

Thoroughly clean the radar speed sensor face. Re-test the tractor in the field to see if the draft control/slip limit functions normally.

  2. Harness Repair

If the 4-prong connector or wiring is damaged, repair the wiring harness or replace the connector pigtail.

  3. Sensor Replacement

If the wiring is intact but the radar sensor (or transmission speed sensor) is dead, remove the faulty sensor and install the OEM replacement part.

  4. Ground Speed Calibration

After replacing the radar sensor or transmission speed sensor, perform a ground speed calibration by putting the tractor in calibration mode, marking out a 100-meter or 400-foot distance on a hard dirt surface, and driving the tractor across that distance so the ETC can learn the new sensor's pulse rate.

  5. Clear Codes

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 1035 code from the Hitch controller and test the tractor under a draft load to ensure the slip percentage reads accurately on the dash.
