New Holland 1051 – Instrument Cluster: No CAN Communication With Engine Controller

Issue description

The system is unable to establish CAN communication with the engine controller (ECU/ECM). This indicates a critical loss of data exchange on the CAN bus network between the engine controller and other monitoring modules, such as the instrument cluster. Because the modules cannot exchange necessary operational data, this communication breakdown prevents the machine from operating correctly, often resulting in a failure to crank, a no-start condition, or the engine remaining stuck at idle.

Applies to these machines

  • L213
  • L215
  • L218
  • L220
  • L221
  • L223
  • L225
  • L228
  • L230
  • L234
  • C227
  • C232
  • C238
  • C245
  • TR270

Check the cause

  1. Check all related fuses and relays, specifically looking for three 2-amp fuses under a weather-pack connector at the rear of the machine, and main power relays/fuses for the ECU

  2. Visually inspect the main wiring harness and connectors for rubbing, chafing, corrosion, or a loose pin at the ECU connector

  3. Verify power and ground to the ECU under load using an incandescent test light (a multimeter may show phantom voltage without current carrying capacity)

  4. Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test with machine power completely off: measure between CAN High and CAN Low (60 Ohms is healthy; 120 Ohms indicates an open circuit or missing resistor; significantly lower than 60 Ohms indicates a short circuit or faulty module)

  5. Perform a CAN Bus Voltage Test with system powered on: CAN High should be 2.5-3.0V, and CAN Low should be 2.0-2.5V

Repair steps

  1. Perform initial diagnostics

Complete all visual inspections and verify fuses, relays, power, and ground to rule out simple connection issues before replacing major components.

  2. Diagnose open circuit (if resistance is 120 Ohms)

If the CAN resistance test reads 120 Ohms, there is an open circuit or a missing terminating resistor. Use a wiring diagram to trace the circuit and repair the broken wire or replace the failed resistor.

  3. Isolate faulty module (if resistance is 60 Ohms)

If CAN resistance is correct at 60 Ohms but the fault persists, disconnect modules one by one from the CAN network to see if the fault disappears, which isolates a potentially faulty controller pulling the network down.

  4. Replace Engine Control Unit (ECU)

If wiring, grounds, and CAN resistance are verified good, and the ECU is unresponsive to diagnostic tools despite having proper power and ground, replace the ECU.

  5. Repair or replace wiring harness

If a section of the wiring harness is found to be damaged during inspection, repair the wires or replace the affected harness section.
