New Holland 11 – Rear PTO: Driver is on and no current is sensed

Issue description

The Rear PTO controller has activated the driver for the PTO engagement solenoid but is not detecting the expected electrical current draw in the circuit. This condition typically indicates an open circuit, a faulty solenoid coil, or a failure in the wiring harness preventing current flow when voltage is sent to the component.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series
  • T7 Series
  • T8 Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear PTO solenoid for chafing, melting, corrosion, or loose/disconnected connectors.

  2. Check all fuses and relays related to the PTO system, as a blown fuse or faulty relay will interrupt power to the solenoid.

  3. Ensure all safety interlocks for PTO operation (seat switch, clutch switch, and brake interlocks) are functioning correctly.

Repair steps

  1. Access the PTO solenoid

Locate the rear PTO engagement solenoid on the tractor. It is generally located on or near the rear axle or PTO gearbox.

  2. Test solenoid resistance

Disconnect the wiring harness from the solenoid. Using a multimeter set to Ohms, test across the two pins of the solenoid. A healthy solenoid coil should show a specific resistance value; a reading of infinite resistance indicates an open circuit within the solenoid (a likely cause for this fault), and a reading of zero indicates a short circuit.

  3. Test harness voltage

With the key on and the PTO switch engaged, carefully test for voltage at the wiring harness connector that plugs into the solenoid. You should read approximately 12 volts.

  4. Test wiring harness continuity

If no voltage is present at the solenoid connector during step 3, check for continuity in the wiring harness between the controller and the solenoid to locate a break in the power or ground wire.

  5. Replace PTO solenoid

If the solenoid has an open circuit (infinite resistance), or if 12V is present at the connector but the solenoid does not activate and the fault persists, replace the rear PTO solenoid valve.
