New Holland 112 – TCM: Reverse Clutch Solenoid or Wiring Issue
Issue description
The transmission control module (TCM) has detected an electrical fault in the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. This indicates that the circuit is either open (a break in the electrical path) or shorted to ground (the power wire is making an unintended connection to the tractor's frame or another ground point), preventing proper engagement of the reverse clutch.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission solenoids for chafing, cuts, melting, or corrosion
Disconnect and inspect the electrical connectors for the transmission solenoids, checking for bent, corroded, or pushed-out pins. Ensure the connectors are clean, dry, and securely seated
Perform a solenoid resistance test using a multimeter (typically 5-30 Ohms). An 'OL' reading indicates an open circuit, while near-zero indicates a short
Perform a voltage and ground test by back-probing the solenoid connector with the key on and reverse commanded to verify 12V power and a good ground
Perform a short-to-ground test by disconnecting the harness from the TCM and checking for continuity between the reverse solenoid's power wire and the chassis ground
Repair steps
Prepare machine for service
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery.
Locate the reverse clutch solenoid
Access the transmission control valve block on the right side of the transmission housing and identify the reverse clutch solenoid (often explicitly marked 'REV').
Perform diagnostics
Complete the electrical tests outlined in the section above to confirm whether the fault lies with the solenoid itself or the wiring.
Repair wiring harness
If diagnostics indicate an open or short in the wiring, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness. Ensure all connections are clean, secure, and protected from future damage.
Replace faulty solenoid
If the solenoid fails the resistance test, clean the area, unthread and remove the old solenoid (expect some fluid loss). Lubricate the new O-rings with clean hydraulic fluid, install the new solenoid, and torque to manufacturer specifications. Do not overtighten. Reconnect the electrical connector.
Reassemble and verify repair
Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, check and top up transmission fluid as necessary, and engage reverse gear to confirm the fault code does not reappear.
