New Holland 12 – TCM: Master Clutch Potentiometer Short to +12 Volts or Short to 5 Vreff
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the clutch pedal position sensor (potentiometer) that is higher than the expected operating range. The system has detected that the sensor's signal wire is shorted directly to a 12-volt power source or to the 5-volt reference (Vref) circuit. Because of this short, the tractor's computer cannot accurately determine the physical position of the clutch pedal.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness between the clutch pedal potentiometer and the transmission controller for chafing, melting, or pinched wires
Inspect the potentiometer connector (C077) and transmission controller connectors (C533, C534) for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins
Use the tractor's diagnostic 'H' Menu (routine H9, Channel 0) to monitor the clutch pedal potentiometer values while operating the pedal (should smoothly change between 26 and 91). While monitoring the value, carefully wiggle the harness to see if an intermittent short can be detected.
Repair steps
Disconnect potentiometer
Disconnect the electrical connector at the master clutch potentiometer to isolate it from the harness for testing.
Test harness for shorts
With keyswitch ON, measure DC volts between the harness-side signal pin and chassis ground. It should read close to 0V. If it reads 5V or 12V, repair or replace the shorted harness.
Test potentiometer resistance
With keyswitch OFF, measure the total resistance between the two outer pins of the potentiometer. Next, measure resistance between the center signal pin and one outer pin while slowly operating the clutch pedal (resistance must change smoothly). Repeat this test between the center pin and the other outer pin. If readings jump erratically or show open/short at any point, replace the potentiometer.
Replace transmission controller
If both the harness and potentiometer test correctly, the transmission controller (XCM/TCM) may be faulty and require replacement. This is the least likely cause.
Calibrate new sensor
If the potentiometer was replaced, perform a calibration procedure via the diagnostic 'H' menu so the controller learns the new sensor values.

The sensor is frequently sold as a complete assembly with a short, weather-resistant wiring harness pigtail attached. Verify the exact part number against your specific tractor series, as the mounting bracket orientation can vary slightly between the TM/TS series and the larger TG/T8000 series.
