New Holland 129 – ATC: High Pressure Switch Cycling Error

Issue description

Fault code 129 is logged by the Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) module when the air conditioning system's high-pressure switch is detected to be cycling on and off rapidly, specifically occurring two times within a one-minute period. This indicates an underlying issue within the A/C system that is causing significant and rapid fluctuations in the high-side pressure, or a fault with the switch or its wiring.

Check the cause

  1. Verify A/C system charge (most common cause): Connect a manifold gauge set to check static and running pressures against an R-134a chart (e.g., at 80°F, low side should be 40-50 PSI, high side 175-210 PSI) to identify undercharge or overcharge. High readings on both gauges can indicate an overcharge, while low readings suggest an undercharge and a potential leak.

  2. Inspect for airflow obstructions: Check condenser coils, radiator, and coolers for dust, chaff, and debris. Ensure the engine cooling fan is operating correctly.

  3. Check cab air filters: Look for clogs that could restrict airflow over the evaporator and cause icing.

  4. Inspect wiring and connectors: Visually check the harness leading to the high-pressure switch for damage, fraying, or corrosion.

  5. Test the high-pressure switch: Disconnect the electrical connector and check for continuity across the terminals using a multimeter. A normally closed switch should show continuity at rest with sufficient static pressure. An open circuit at normal pressure indicates a failed switch.

Repair steps

  1. Address refrigerant charge

If the system is overcharged or undercharged, recover the refrigerant using appropriate equipment. It is illegal to vent refrigerant into the atmosphere. Evacuate the system to remove air and moisture, then recharge with the precise amount of R-134a specified for the machine model.

  2. Repair wiring

If a wiring issue is identified during diagnostics, repair the damaged section of the harness or clean the connector terminals.

  3. Replace high-pressure switch

If the switch is faulty, disconnect the battery. Unplug the electrical connector, carefully unscrew the old switch, and install the new one ensuring a snug fit to prevent leaks. Reconnect the electrical connector and battery.

  4. Final system test

Run the A/C system with the engine at operating RPM (e.g., 1500 RPM), blower on high, and temperature set to maximum cool. Monitor pressures with manifold gauges to ensure stability and check for recurring fault codes on the ATC display.
