New Holland 14201 – MIU: Steering Sensor Shorted to Positive or Circuit Open
Issue description
The steering sensor is experiencing a short circuit to a positive voltage source or an open circuit. This electrical fault disrupts the signal from the steering sensor, which is crucial for monitoring the steering angle of the wheels. The disruption can lead to inaccurate steering feedback or a complete loss of steering control information for the tractor's electronic systems.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the steering angle sensor for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
Ensure the sensor connector (e.g., C014) is not damaged, the pins are correctly positioned, and the connection is tight.
Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the New Holland EST) to read fault codes and monitor real-time data from the steering angle sensor to confirm erratic or missing data.
Perform a voltage and angle test via the tractor's monitor calibration or diagnostic screen. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock and verify that voltage and angle readings change progressively without abrupt drops, delays, or zero readings.
Perform an electrical test with the keyswitch on (engine off). Disconnect the sensor connector and measure DC voltage for a short to the positive supply.
Measure the resistance between pin 1 and pin 3 of the sensor-side connector. The resistance should be between 5K and 6K Ohms. If outside this range, the sensor is likely faulty.
Repair steps
Access the Sensor
To access the steering sensor, you may need to turn the steering wheel fully to one side. For example, on a T8 tractor, turning the wheel fully to the left provides access to the sensor.
Remove Protective Cover
Remove the protective cover over the sensor. This is typically held on by several bolts (e.g., four 24mm bolts on a T8).
Disconnect the Sensor
Disconnect the electrical connector from the steering sensor.
Remove the Sensor
The sensor is usually fixed with two Torx screws. Remove these screws to release the sensor. Note that the sensor may be spring-loaded and will rotate when the screws are removed.
Install the New Sensor
When installing the new sensor, it needs to be correctly oriented. For a T8, the sensor is placed with the connector oriented towards the 3 o'clock position and then rotated into its final fixing position. Align the sensor with its mounting holes and the corresponding pin or encaixe. Secure the new sensor with the Torx screws.
Reconnect and Reassemble
Reconnect the electrical connector to the new sensor. Reinstall the protective cover and tighten the bolts.
Calibration
After replacing the sensor, a calibration may be necessary. This is often done through the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu (HH Menu) or with a diagnostic tool. On some models, a manual reset procedure might be possible by turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times after reconnecting the battery, but using the OEM procedure is recommended.
