New Holland 1533 – UCM: Backup Alarm Activation: Short to Power

Issue description

The backup alarm is experiencing a short to power, meaning the electrical circuit has an unintended connection to a power source. This electrical issue can cause the alarm to sound continuously, fail to operate, or lead to a blown fuse and potential damage to the wiring harness or control module.

Applies to these machines

  • T-series
  • WORKMASTER series
  • FARMALL series
  • MAXXUM series
  • PUMA series
  • L213
  • L215
  • L218
  • L220
  • L223
  • L225
  • L230
  • C227
  • C232
  • C238
  • LX885
  • LS185.B

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the backup alarm for chafed, pinched, or melted insulation, and check connectors for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins.

  2. Disconnect the backup alarm and check for constant power at the harness connector with the key in the 'RUN' position (machine not in reverse).

  3. Isolate the alarm by connecting it directly to a known good 12V power source and ground to verify if the unit itself has failed.

  4. Inspect the reverse pressure or mechanical switch and its wiring for damage or signs of being stuck in the closed position.

  5. Check the ground circuit for the alarm to ensure it is clean, tight, and has good continuity.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Turn the machine's ignition and main disconnect switch to the 'OFF' position before starting any electrical repairs.

  2. Isolate the short

Disconnect the main harness connector at the UCM. Check for continuity between the backup alarm power pin at the UCM connector and the main power input pins. If continuity exists, the UCM has an internal short and may need replacement. If no continuity, the short is in the wiring harness.

  3. Repair or replace wiring

Trace the backup alarm circuit wire from the UCM to the alarm. Repair damaged sections by splicing in new wire with sealed connectors, or replace the harness section if damage is extensive.

  4. Replace faulty components

Replace the backup alarm unit or the reverse pressure/mechanical switch with a new OEM part if they failed the diagnostic checks.

  5. Reassemble and test

Reconnect all components, turn power on, and clear fault codes. Start the machine and engage reverse to verify the alarm only sounds in reverse and code 1533 does not return.
