New Holland 160 – TMF: PTO Clutch Slipping Too Much

Issue description

The PTO clutch is slipping excessively for the duration of 5 seconds or longer. The machine's software has detected a mismatch between the commanded PTO speed and the actual rotation speed of the PTO shaft, meaning the mechanical clutch pack is failing to hold the torque load and is slipping.

Applies to these machines

  • TM Series
  • TS-A Series
  • T6000 Series
  • T6050
  • T7000 Series
  • Boomer 40
  • Boomer 50
  • 4835
  • 5635
  • 6635
  • 7635

Check the cause

  1. Check battery and charging system voltage (should be 12.4-12.6V at rest, 13.0-14.1V running) to ensure sufficient power for the PTO solenoid

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the PTO clutch solenoid for damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  3. Verify the functionality of the PTO engagement switch and all related safety interlocks (e.g., seat and neutral switches)

  4. Perform a 'click test' by applying 12V directly to the PTO clutch solenoid to check for mechanical engagement

  5. Measure the resistance across the PTO clutch coil terminals (normal reading is 2-4 ohms; below 2 ohms indicates a short, infinite indicates an open circuit)

  6. Check transmission and hydraulic fluid levels and condition

  7. Perform a PTO clutch pressure test at the rear test port with warm oil (140°F) at 1900 RPM (expected pressure is 240-270 PSI; low pressure indicates internal leaks or worn seals)

  8. Check PTO clutch calibration status in the tractor's diagnostic H-menu

Repair steps

  1. Resolve electrical faults

If diagnostic checks reveal low voltage, faulty wiring, or an out-of-spec solenoid, repair the wiring harness, address the charging system, or replace the PTO solenoid.

  2. Address low hydraulic pressure

If PTO clutch pressure is significantly below the 240-270 PSI specification, prepare to inspect the internal clutch pack for worn or damaged seals.

  3. Rebuild or replace PTO clutch assembly

Drain hydraulic fluid and remove rear PTO components (may require lifting the cab). Disassemble the clutch pack and inspect friction discs, steel plates, and seals. Replace worn components in the correct orientation, reassemble, and refill with hydraulic fluid.

  4. Perform post-repair calibration

Navigate to the diagnostic H-menu (e.g., H1) on the instrument cluster and perform the PTO clutch calibration procedure to ensure proper engagement pressures and timing.
