New Holland 18042 – ACM: EHR 2 Lever Position Low Voltage

Issue description

The Armrest Control Module (ACM) has detected an abnormally low voltage signal from the position sensor (potentiometer) of the Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) 2 lever. This sensor communicates the lever's position to the control system for precise hydraulic remote valve operation. A low voltage reading indicates the signal has dropped below the expected operational range, which can be caused by a short circuit to ground, a faulty sensor, or a wiring issue. This condition may affect the proper operation of the hydraulic component associated with this lever position.

Applies to these machines

  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T7.260
  • T7.270
  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.330
  • T8.360
  • T8.390
  • TG245
  • Magnum 235-340

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the armrest and the EHR lever assembly for chafing, pinching, corrosion, or internal wire breaks (gently pull wires near connectors to check for stretching).

  2. Check for other active fault codes using the diagnostic menu or an Electronic Service Tool (EST). Faults related to the 5-volt reference supply (e.g., code 2054) indicate a broader electrical issue affecting multiple sensors.

  3. Test the potentiometer resistance by disconnecting its three-wire plug. Measure resistance between the two outer pins (should be fixed), then between the center pin and an outer pin while moving the lever (should change smoothly without jumps or drops to zero).

  4. Perform a voltage check by back-probing the signal wire of the potentiometer's connector with the key on. Voltage should vary smoothly between approximately 0.6V and 4.0V as the lever is moved.

Repair steps

  1. Calibrate EHR levers

Access the tractor's diagnostic or 'H' menu (via instrument cluster or monitor). Initiate EHR/hydraulic calibration and follow on-screen prompts to move each EHR lever to full forward (extend), full rearward (retract), and neutral positions. Key off the tractor to save the new calibration values.

  2. Disassemble armrest console

If the fault persists after calibration, the issue is likely hardware. Partially disassemble the armrest console to access the EHR lever assembly.

  3. Remove faulty potentiometer or lever

Locate the potentiometer integrated into the base of the EHR lever. Depending on the specific design, remove either the faulty potentiometer or the entire lever assembly.

  4. Install new component

Install the new EHR lever potentiometer or lever assembly, ensuring all electrical connections are secure.

  5. Reassemble and recalibrate

Reassemble the armrest console and perform the EHR lever calibration procedure again. This is crucial for the control module to learn the new sensor's voltage range.
