New Holland 18044 – ARU: EHR 3 Lever Position - Voltage Too Low

Issue description

The armrest control module has detected that the voltage from the position sensor of the number 3 Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) lever is below the expected operational range. This indicates a potential short circuit, a failing sensor, or a wiring issue. A too low voltage reading prevents the system from accurately determining the operator's command, which can lead to the associated hydraulic remote being inoperative or behaving erratically.

Applies to these machines

  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T7.260
  • T7.270
  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.330
  • T8.360
  • T8.390
  • T8.420
  • T8.435
  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 340

Check the cause

  1. Check overall system voltage to ensure the battery is fully charged and the charging system is functioning correctly, as low voltage can trigger erroneous faults

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to and around the armrest control unit for chafing, pinching, or breaks in the insulation

  3. Gently pull on individual wires near connectors to check for internal wire breaks, stretching, or looseness

  4. Disconnect and inspect the electrical connectors related to the armrest controller and the EHR levers for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion. Clean and reseat securely

Repair steps

  1. Access the Potentiometer

Disassemble a portion of the armrest to access the wiring for the EHR 3 lever.

  2. Identify Wires

The potentiometer will have three wires: a 5V supply, a ground, and a signal wire. Schematics may be required for precise identification.

  3. Test Total Resistance

Disconnect the lever's connector. Use a multimeter set to Ohms (Ω) to measure the resistance between the 5V supply and ground pins. This value should be stable and within the manufacturer's specification (typically in the kilo-ohm range, e.g., 5 kΩ).

  4. Test Signal Voltage (Back-Probing)

Reconnect the connector and turn the tractor key to the "ON" position (engine off). Carefully back-probe the signal wire with the multimeter set to DC Volts. With the lever in the neutral position, there should be a specific voltage reading. Slowly move the lever through its full range of motion (raise and lower). The voltage should change smoothly and proportionally with the lever's movement. A "Voltage Too Low" fault suggests the signal voltage is below the expected range, potentially due to a short to ground in the signal wire or an internal failure of the potentiometer.

  5. Lever Calibration (Diagnostic)

Perform a calibration routine for the EHR levers, accessed through the instrument cluster's diagnostic "H" menu or the IntelliView™ display. If the calibration fails for that specific lever, it further points to a hardware issue.

  6. Disassembly

Carefully disassemble the armrest console to gain access to the EHR lever assemblies.

  7. Component Replacement

Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty lever/potentiometer. Remove the mounting hardware and replace the unit with a new OEM part.

  8. Reassembly

Reassemble the armrest console, ensuring all wiring is correctly routed and secured to prevent future damage.

  9. Calibration (Post-Repair)

Once the new part is installed, perform the EHR lever calibration procedure as specified in the tractor's operator or service manual. This step is crucial for the controller to learn the new sensor's voltage range.

  10. Clear Fault Codes

After a successful calibration, clear the stored fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic menu or an electronic service tool. Operate the lever to confirm that the fault does not return.
