New Holland 18061 – ACM: Reference Voltage Short Circuit to 0V

Issue description

The Armrest Control Unit (ARU) has detected a short circuit to ground (0 Volts) in one of its 5V reference voltage circuits. This stable reference voltage supplies power to various sensors, potentiometers, and components on the armrest. When this voltage is shorted to ground, the affected sensors cannot function correctly, leading to inaccurate sensor readings, improper operation of the armrest control signals, and a loss of function.

Applies to these machines

  • T7 Series
  • T7000 Series
  • T7030
  • T7040
  • T7050
  • T7060
  • T9 Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery health, load-test the battery, and check all related fuses and relays to rule out power supply issues.

  2. Inspect all wiring harnesses connected to the armrest control unit for chafing, pinching, or corrosion, paying close attention to wiring near the seat.

  3. Disconnect sensors connected to the armrest control unit one by one to see if the fault code disappears, which indicates the source of the short.

  4. Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the 5V reference wire and chassis ground at the controller's connector.

  5. Use a low-amperage current clamp to trace the circuit with the highest current draw, which will lead to the short.

  6. Test individual sensors on the affected circuit for internal shorts.

  7. Utilize a New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to view live data and pinpoint the fault's origin.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the faulty circuit

Disconnect all sensors and actuators from the Armrest Control Unit.

  2. Check for short at controller

With everything disconnected from the module, use a multimeter to check if the short to ground persists on the 5V reference pin of the controller itself.

  3. Identify the source

If the short is gone with all components disconnected, reconnect each sensor one at a time until the fault reappears; the last component connected is the source. If the short remains at the controller's pin with everything disconnected, the Armrest Control Unit is internally faulted.

  4. Repair or replace faulty component

Repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness, replace the identified faulty sensor, or replace the Armrest Control Unit if it is confirmed to be internally faulted.

  5. Clear codes and calibrate

After the repair, clear all fault codes using a diagnostic tool. If the Armrest Control Unit was replaced, perform any required programming or calibration to ensure it functions correctly with the machine.
