New Holland 2011 – Transmission: Clutch Pot Open Circuit or Short to Ground

Issue description

The transmission control module has detected an electrical fault in the clutch potentiometer circuit. The signal from the potentiometer is outside its expected range because the circuit is either broken (open circuit) or has an improper connection to an electrical ground (short to ground). This condition affects the proper operation of the clutch system, as the controller cannot determine the exact position of the clutch pedal, which is critical for smooth gear shifting and clutch engagement.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the clutch pedal potentiometer and the transmission controller for chafed wires, broken wires, loose connections, or corrosion.

  2. Check the tractor's diagnostic display for any other active fault codes, particularly those related to the 5-volt reference supply, which could point to a broader electrical issue.

  3. Perform a resistance test on the disconnected potentiometer using a multimeter. Measure across the two outer pins for a fixed value, then measure between the center pin and an outer pin while slowly pressing the pedal. The resistance should change smoothly without erratic jumps or dropping to zero.

  4. Back-probe the signal wire at the potentiometer's connector with the sensor connected and the key on. The voltage should sweep smoothly as the pedal is depressed (e.g., ~4V with pedal up to 0.6V-0.8V with pedal down). A reading of 0 volts or a constant 5 volts indicates a short or open circuit.

  5. If equipped, access the diagnostic 'H' menu and use the 'HA' routine to monitor the live clutch pedal position (displayed as 0-99%) to verify if the controller is receiving a signal.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Disconnect the battery before starting any electrical repairs to ensure safety.

  2. Access the potentiometer

Locate the clutch potentiometer at the clutch pedal assembly. It is typically mounted on the pedal pivot bracket inside the cab.

  3. Remove the old potentiometer

Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the mounting hardware that secures the potentiometer to the pedal assembly, noting the orientation of the sensor and any linkage.

  4. Install the new potentiometer

Mount the new potentiometer in the same position as the old one. Ensure any linkage or actuating arms are correctly aligned, then reconnect the electrical connector.

  5. Perform calibration

After replacing the potentiometer, a calibration procedure is required for the controller to learn the new sensor's voltage range for the pedal's travel. The exact procedure varies by model series. For some models (e.g., McCormick, potentially similar for some New Holland): With the key on, unplug the new potentiometer for 5 seconds, then plug it back in. The dash should beep and a neutral light may flash. Slowly press the clutch pedal all the way down and hold it until the beeping stops. Turn the key off to save the settings. For T7 Series: Put the tractor in calibration mode by holding the upshift and downshift buttons while starting the engine, then follow a sequence of button presses. For TS Series: Use the diagnostic 'H' menu 'HA' routine to set up the clutch pedal switch (should operate between 8% and 14% of pedal travel). For Genesis Series: Enter calibration mode by holding the shift lever to the left while turning the key on (displays 'CC'). Always consult the specific operator's or service manual for the correct calibration procedure.
