New Holland 2039 – TCU: Clutch 4 Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The transmission's electronic control module (TCM) has detected a break in the electrical circuit for clutch solenoid 4. This open circuit condition prevents electrical current from flowing to actuate the solenoid. The system logs this fault when it attempts to send a signal to the solenoid but receives no electrical response, which can be caused by a disconnected plug, a broken wire, or a failed internal solenoid coil.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission control valve block for chafing, rubbing, rodent damage, or wires pulled by debris (especially under the cab and around the gearbox)

  2. Inspect the transmission solenoid valve block connectors for corrosion, moisture ingress, or backed-out pins, and disconnect and reconnect the main connector to ensure it is seated properly

  3. Check for other active fault codes that may point to a related underlying issue

  4. Perform a solenoid resistance test using a multimeter across the two pins of the disconnected solenoid (an 'OL' or infinity reading indicates an internal coil break)

  5. Check harness continuity between the Transmission Control Unit and the solenoid connector if the solenoid resistance is within specification

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Ensure the tractor is on level ground, the parking brake is engaged, and the engine is off.

  2. Locate the Component

Locate the Clutch 4 / High Range PWM Valve on the transmission's main control valve block.

  3. Perform Diagnostics

Follow the diagnostic checks to confirm whether the fault lies with the solenoid itself, the wiring, or the connector.

  4. Address the Fault

If a broken wire or corroded connector is found, repair or replace the affected section of the harness and ensure all connections are clean and secure. If the solenoid is confirmed to have an open circuit, it must be replaced.

  5. Replacement

Unscrew the failed solenoid from the valve block (be prepared for transmission fluid to leak). Ensure the new solenoid's O-rings are correctly installed and lubricated with clean transmission fluid. Install the new solenoid, torque it to the manufacturer's specification, and reconnect the electrical connector securely.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

After the repair, clear the fault codes from the transmission controller. Depending on the tractor model and transmission type, a transmission calibration procedure may be required.

  7. Verify Repair

Operate the tractor and ensure the fault code does not return and that the transmission shifts correctly through all ranges.
