2041

New Holland 2041 – TCM: Open Circuit of Clutch Solenoid 3

Issue description

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected an open circuit in the electrical path for the solenoid that actuates clutch pack number 3. This indicates a break or disconnection in the wiring, an internal failure of the solenoid coil, or a poor connection, preventing current from flowing and the solenoid from activating. Symptoms include the appearance of a transmission warning light (often a cog symbol) on the dashboard, fault code 2041 displayed on the monitor, inability to engage gears or the tractor failing to move, and the gear display flashing or going blank.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission control valve assembly for chafing, cuts, or heat damage. Ensure all connectors are clean, dry, and securely seated.

  2. Inspect connector C026 (Clutch C solenoid connector) and main controller connectors C533 and C535 for corrosion, damage, or a loose fit.

  3. Perform a solenoid resistance test on Clutch Solenoid 3 (expected resistance is typically 5-30 ohms; an 'OL' or infinite reading indicates a broken internal coil).

  4. Test wiring harness continuity between the solenoid connector and the TCM to check for broken wires.

  5. Check for a short to ground by testing resistance between each wire and a clean chassis ground point (should read infinite).

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the park brake, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the battery before beginning any electrical repairs.

  2. Locate Components

Locate the clutch solenoids in a valve block assembly mounted on the side of the transmission housing, often on the right-hand side. The Transmission Control Module is often found within the cab or on the chassis.

  3. Perform Diagnostics

Follow the diagnostic checks outlined to confirm the point of failure.

  4. Replace the Faulty Component

If the solenoid is faulty: Unscrew and remove the solenoid from the transmission valve body (be prepared for some hydraulic fluid to leak out). Install the new solenoid, ensuring any O-rings or seals are correctly fitted and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid, and torque to specification. If the wiring is faulty: Repair the broken wire using an approved sealed connector or replace the faulty section of the harness, ensuring the repair is protected from moisture and abrasion.

  5. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect all electrical connectors and the battery. Start the tractor and check for any remaining fault codes. Clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic menu or a service tool. A transmission calibration may be required after replacing a solenoid. Operate the transmission to ensure normal shifting has been restored.
