New Holland 2059 – TCM: Shuttle Lever Switches Disagree

Issue description

The system has detected a logical conflict in the signals sent from the shuttle lever's internal switches to the Transmission Control Module (TCM). The controller is receiving contradictory information, such as switch inputs indicating the lever is in both Forward and Neutral simultaneously. Because the switches are not providing consistent signals, the TCM is unable to determine the operator's intended direction. As a safety feature to prevent unintended movement, the tractor will likely not move until the fault is resolved.

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the shuttle lever through all positions (Forward, Neutral, Reverse) multiple times to see if this frees up any potentially stuck internal switches.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the shuttle lever down the steering column. Look for pinched, chafed, or damaged wires, particularly where the steering column tilts or telescopes.

  3. Disconnect the shuttle lever's multi-pin connector and inspect for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins. Clean with a suitable contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Perform an On-Board Diagnostics H-Menu Switch Test (if equipped, e.g., TS series). This often requires a special diagnostic switch tool (e.g., 4FT 950) to be connected to the diagnostic port. Access the H5 menu and verify that operating the shuttle lever displays specific codes (e.g., d22 for Forward, d23 for Reverse) accompanied by an audible beep.

  5. Perform a resistance test at the shuttle lever's connector pins. A reading of 'O.L.' (Over Limit) or infinite resistance where a value is expected indicates an open circuit within the switch, while readings significantly outside specified ranges suggest a faulty switch.

Repair steps

  1. Confirm the fault

Use the diagnostic checks above to confirm that the shuttle lever assembly is the source of the fault and not a wiring issue in the main harness.

  2. Prepare machine for repair

Disconnect the tractor's battery and engage the parking brake before beginning any repair work.

  3. Access the shuttle lever

Remove the steering column cowlings and any other plastic shrouds necessary to gain access to the shuttle lever's mounting point and electrical connector.

  4. Remove faulty lever

Disconnect the electrical connector from the base of the old shuttle lever. Unbolt the lever assembly from the steering column and remove it.

  5. Install new lever

Mount the new shuttle lever assembly onto the steering column, ensuring it is securely fastened. Connect the electrical plug to the new lever.

  6. Reassemble components

Reinstall the steering column cowlings and any other trim pieces that were removed during disassembly.

  7. Test and verify

Reconnect the tractor's battery. Turn the ignition on, start the tractor, and verify that fault code 2059 has cleared. Test the shuttle lever by shifting between Forward, Neutral, and Reverse to ensure the tractor moves as commanded. Perform a transmission calibration if recommended for your specific model.
