New Holland 2071 – TCM: Forward Gear Switch Open Circuit or Short
Issue description
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a very low voltage or a complete loss of signal from the forward gear switch, indicating an open circuit or a short to ground in the wiring or connection. This switch is a critical component of the Forward-Neutral-Reverse-Park (FNRP) module, which communicates the operator's desired direction of travel. An illogical or missing signal from this switch prevents the controller from safely engaging the forward gear.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the shuttle shift lever (FNRP module) for chafing, breaks, pinched wires, or corrosion, paying special attention to where the harness passes through the steering column or under the cab floor.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the shuttle lever/FNRP module and inspect the pins and sockets for corrosion, moisture, or damage. Clean with electrical contact cleaner.
Cycle the shuttle lever multiple times between forward, neutral, and reverse to see if it can free a potentially stuck internal switch.
Using a digital multimeter, check the continuity of the wire from the transmission controller to the forward switch pin on the FNRP connector.
Check for a short to ground by measuring the resistance between the forward switch wire and a known good chassis ground (there should be no continuity).
Check for other related FNRP codes (such as Code 59 'FNRP pod in illogical state' or Code 68/2073 'Reverse switch shorted to ground') to determine if the fault is isolated to the forward switch or is a larger module/harness issue.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental short circuits before beginning any electrical work.
Access shuttle lever
Remove the necessary steering column shrouds, side console panels, or floor plates to gain access to the shuttle lever assembly, its electrical connectors, and mounting hardware.
Document connections
Take a clear photo of the wiring connectors before disconnecting them to ensure correct reassembly.
Remove old assembly
Disconnect the electrical connectors and unbolt the old shuttle lever assembly from its mounting point.
Install new assembly
Mount the new shuttle lever assembly. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the new electrical connector pins to protect against moisture and corrosion before connecting it to the tractor harness.
Reassemble components
Reassemble all panels and shrouds that were removed, then reconnect the battery.
Clear codes and test
Turn the key to the 'ON' position and clear the fault codes using the tractor's diagnostic menu or a service tool. Check for any other active transmission-related codes and ensure smooth shifting in all gears and directions.
