New Holland 2099 – TCM: Clutch C5 Solenoid Open Circuit
Issue description
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected an open circuit in the electrical path for the solenoid that controls clutch C5. This indicates a break or disconnection in the wiring, the connector, or the internal coil of the solenoid itself, preventing the system from sending electrical current to activate the clutch responsible for engaging the 17th gear. This is often accompanied by a general transmission fault warning light on the dashboard.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission control valve assembly on the right side of the transmission housing for chafed wires, broken wires, loose connectors, or corrosion.
Disconnect and reconnect the main electrical connector at the transmission valve block to ensure it is clean, free of oil or debris, and making a secure connection.
Perform a solenoid resistance test (solenoid coil failure cause): Disconnect the C5 solenoid connector and measure resistance across the two pins. A healthy solenoid reads approximately 7.3 Ohms. An infinite or 'OL' reading confirms a broken internal coil.
Perform a wiring continuity test (wiring harness failure cause): If the solenoid resistance is within specification, check for continuity on the signal and ground wires from the solenoid connector back to the TCM connector.
Repair steps
Prepare machine for service
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the park brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate and identify solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve assembly on the right-hand side of the transmission case. Identify the specific C5 solenoid using a service manual or parts diagram. The solenoids are often distinguished by the color of their connector (e.g., green or black). Without a diagram, you may need to test multiple solenoids or seek dealer assistance.
Remove faulty solenoid
Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid. Using the appropriate wrench, carefully unscrew the solenoid from the valve body. Be prepared for some transmission fluid to leak out; have a drain pan ready.
Install new solenoid
Lightly lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Thread it into the valve body by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reassemble components
Reconnect the electrical connector, reinstall any removed guards or covers, and reconnect the battery.
Check fluid and calibrate
Start the tractor, check the transmission fluid level, and top off as necessary. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure to ensure smooth gear engagement.
Parts you might need
(7)12V PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) valve manufactured by CNH Industrial. Often features a green connector. Always verify the part number with your tractor's specific serial number through a dealer or official parts catalog, as different solenoids (e.g., with black connectors for dump valves) are used in the same valve block.
Superseding part number for 87739558.
Replaces 278506A1. Verify correct part number with an authorized dealer using the tractor's serial number.
