New Holland 2101 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Auxiliary Control Unit (AUX): Open Circuit in the Unloading Clutch Electromagnet 5

Issue description

The fault code indicates an open circuit in the unloading clutch electromagnet 5, meaning there is a break in the electrical path to the component. This condition prevents the clutch from receiving the necessary electrical current to engage, which disables the unloading system. The root cause is typically a broken wire, a loose or corroded connector, a failed solenoid coil, or a control module issue.

Applies to these machines

  • CR Series
  • TX Series
  • CR6090
  • CR9070
  • CR9090
  • TX66

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the unloading auger's clutch solenoid for frayed or broken wires caused by vibration or rubbing.

  2. Check all electrical connectors in the circuit for corrosion, dirt, or moisture, and examine ground connections for looseness or corrosion.

  3. With the machine on and the unloading system activated, use a multimeter or a 12V test light to check for voltage at the connector for the unloading clutch solenoid.

  4. Perform a magnetism test by holding a small metal object near the energized solenoid to see if it attracts the object.

  5. Perform a continuity/resistance test across the solenoid terminals (normal is 3-4 ohms; an infinite reading indicates a broken coil).

  6. Perform a jumper wire test by running a fused jumper from a known good 12V source directly to the solenoid's power terminal to bypass the control circuit.

  7. Check the fuse box for blown fuses or dirty/loose connections related to the unloading or hydraulic systems, and test relays by swapping with a known good one.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the machine on a level surface, shut down the engine, and disconnect the battery before performing any electrical repairs.

  2. Isolate the Fault

Using the diagnostic steps above, pinpoint the exact cause of the open circuit (e.g., a broken wire, corroded connector, or failed solenoid).

  3. Repair Wiring

If a wire is broken, repair it using a sealed, weatherproof splice. If a connector is corroded beyond cleaning, it should be replaced. Ensure all wiring is properly routed and secured to prevent future damage.

  4. Replace Faulty Components

If a fuse is blown, replace it with one of the same amperage (if it blows again, find the short circuit). Replace faulty relays with new ones. If the unloading clutch solenoid is open, loosen the retaining nut or bolts, remove the old solenoid, and install the new one (do not over-tighten nuts).

  5. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect the battery. Start the machine and activate the unloading system to confirm that the clutch now engages and the fault code is cleared.
