New Holland 2331 – TCM: Transmission Clutches Are Slipping

Issue description

The transmission control module (TCM) has detected slippage within one or more of the transmission's clutch packs. This occurs when the controller commands a clutch engagement, but the expected change in gear ratio or engine RPM does not happen, indicating a loss of power transfer through the transmission. This condition can lead to reduced power, difficulty in gear engagement, jerky movements, and excessive heat buildup in the transmission.

Applies to these machines

  • T5
  • T7
  • T8
  • TM115
  • TM120
  • TM125
  • TM130

  • T7000
  • T6080
  • T7030
  • Boomer
  • Workmaster

Check the cause

  1. Verify transmission fluid level and inspect for contamination (milky appearance indicates water ingress, dark/burnt smell indicates overheating, and metallic particles indicate internal mechanical wear).

  2. Inspect transmission filters for clogs or dirt that could restrict fluid flow and cause low pressure.

  3. Check system voltage and ground connections, as electronic transmissions are sensitive to low voltage (e.g., 12.1V instead of 12.6V).

  4. Retrieve all active and stored fault codes using a diagnostic tool to identify related issues with clutch solenoids, speed sensors, or pressure sensors.

  5. Visually inspect the transmission housing, lines, and cooler for hydraulic fluid leaks.

Repair steps

  1. Calibrate transmission clutches

Park on level ground with handbrake applied and transmission oil at normal operating temperature (above 10°C/50°F). Enter calibration mode (often by holding upshift/downshift while turning ignition on, or using diagnostic switch 4FT 950). Set engine RPM to 1200-1300 and follow prompts to calibrate each clutch (C1, C2, etc.). Turn ignition off to save values.

  2. Test clutch solenoids

If calibration fails or does not resolve the fault, test the clutch engagement solenoids for correct electrical resistance and operation to rule out open circuits or shorts to ground.

  3. Perform hydraulic pressure testing

Connect pressure gauges to transmission test ports to measure hydraulic pressure supplied to clutch packs. Low pressure indicates a failing pump, internal leaks, or a faulty pressure regulating valve.

  4. Inspect and replace internal clutch components

If pressures and solenoids are functional, split the tractor to access the transmission. Inspect clutch discs for wear or glazing, and pressure plates for warping. Replace the entire clutch pack (friction and steel plates), release bearing, and pilot bearing as a set.
