New Holland 2343 – TCU: Electromagnetic Clutch A - Open Circuit or Short to Ground

Issue description

The transmission controller (TCU) has detected an open circuit or a short to ground in the electrical circuit of the even clutch solenoid (also referred to as Clutch B or Clutch 1M). This prevents the controller from properly sending electrical signals to the solenoid, which disables the ability to engage or disengage the even-numbered gears and affects overall transmission operation.

Applies to these machines

  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.330
  • T8.350
  • T8.360
  • T8.380
  • T8.390
  • T8.410
  • T8.420
  • T8.435
  • T8010
  • T8050

Check the cause

  1. Check transmission fluid level and condition, as low or burnt fluid can cause transmission issues

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission and the 'Clutch Even' solenoid for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections

  3. Scan for other active or stored fault codes that could point to a broader electrical issue

Repair steps

  1. Locate solenoid

On New Holland T8 series tractors, locate the 'Clutch Even' solenoid on the side of the transmission housing. A parts diagram for the T8050 identifies it as part of the powershift valve assembly, and a hydraulic schematic for the T8.275 also shows its location.

  2. Disconnect solenoid

Safely disconnect the electrical connector from the 'Clutch Even' solenoid.

  3. Test for short to ground

Using a multimeter set to Ohms, probe the solenoid's power pin in the harness connector and a clean, unpainted chassis ground. A reading of very low resistance indicates a short circuit in the wiring.

  4. Test for open circuit

Set the multimeter to measure resistance and place the probes on the two electrical pins of the solenoid itself. A reading of 'OL' or infinite resistance indicates an open circuit within the solenoid, meaning it has failed.

  5. Test solenoid resistance

If the solenoid is not open, measure the resistance between its pins and compare this reading to the manufacturer's specifications. A reading outside the specified range indicates a faulty solenoid.

  6. Test harness power

With the key on and engine off, carefully test for voltage at the power pin of the solenoid's harness connector to verify if the TCU is sending a signal to the solenoid.

  7. Repair or replace

If the wiring is shorted, repair or replace the harness. If the solenoid is open, shorted internally, or has incorrect resistance, replace the solenoid.
