New Holland 2345 – TCM: Clutch C3-4 Solenoid Open Circuit or Short to Ground

Issue description

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected an electrical malfunction within the circuit of the Clutch C3-4 solenoid, specifically an open circuit or a short to ground. This condition prevents the solenoid from being energized correctly, which disrupts the proper flow of hydraulic fluid needed to engage or disengage the C3-4 clutch pack. The C3 and C4 clutches are integral to the selection of specific gears within the powershift transmission.

Applies to these machines

  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.320
  • T8.330
  • T8.350
  • T8.360
  • T8.380
  • T8.390
  • T8.410
  • T8.420
  • T8.435
  • T7 Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the C3-4 solenoid for cuts, abrasions, or corrosion. Ensure the connector is clean, dry, and securely seated.

  2. Check for related fault codes that may help isolate the issue (e.g., code 2355 indicates a short to +12 Volts, and 2366 indicates the clutch is not calibrated).

  3. Perform a solenoid resistance test: disconnect the solenoid and measure resistance across its terminals with a multimeter. A healthy coil typically measures 5-30 ohms. Infinite resistance indicates an open coil; very low resistance indicates a short.

  4. Perform a wiring harness continuity test: with the solenoid and TCM disconnected, check the wires between them for any breaks (open circuit).

  5. Check for a short to ground: use a multimeter to check for continuity between the solenoid's signal wire and the tractor's chassis ground.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine for service

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery before beginning electrical repairs.

  2. Access the solenoid

Locate the clutch solenoids on the side of the transmission housing, typically under a cover. Drain the transmission fluid if necessary to access the component.

  3. Repair or replace wiring

If diagnostic checks reveal a wiring fault, repair the damaged section using appropriate connectors and heat shrink for a sealed repair. Replace the entire harness if the damage is extensive.

  4. Replace the solenoid

If the solenoid failed the resistance test, unbolt the old unit (watching for residual hydraulic fluid) and install the new solenoid. Ensure O-rings and seals are correctly seated and torque bolts to manufacturer specifications.

  5. Reassemble and refill

Reinstall any removed covers and refill the transmission with the correct type and amount of hydraulic fluid.

  6. Clear codes and calibrate

Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes from the TCM, and perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure to integrate the new component.
