New Holland 2356 – TCU: C5-6 Clutch Solenoid Short to +12V

Issue description

The Transmission Control Unit (TCU) has detected a short circuit in the C5-6 clutch solenoid's electrical circuit. The controller is sensing current being drawn from the +12V power source even when the solenoid's driver is commanded off. This indicates that the solenoid coil or its wiring is receiving voltage when it should not be, pointing to a fault in the wiring harness or the solenoid itself.

Applies to these machines

  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.330
  • T8.360
  • T8.390
  • T8.410
  • T8.420
  • T8.435
  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 240
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 260
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 290
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 315
  • Magnum 340
  • Magnum 380
  • MX255

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission control valves for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched areas that could cause a short to a +12V wire.

  2. Check the connectors at both the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) and the transmission solenoid valve block for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion.

  3. Perform a Solenoid Resistance Test: Disconnect the wiring harness from the C5-6 clutch solenoid and measure resistance across the two pins. Expected resistance is 9.9 to 10 Ohms. A significantly lower reading indicates a short within the solenoid coil. An infinite reading ("OL") indicates an open circuit, which is a different fault but still points to a failed solenoid.

  4. Perform a Wiring Harness Test: With the solenoid and TCU disconnected, check for continuity between the signal wire for the C5-6 solenoid at the TCU connector and the +12V power source. Continuity confirms a short circuit in the harness.

  5. Perform a Solenoid Swap Test: Label the solenoids and their connectors to ensure correct reassembly. Swap the suspected faulty C5-6 solenoid with an adjacent, functioning solenoid (e.g., C3-C4). Clear codes and operate the tractor. If the fault follows the solenoid, the solenoid is faulty. If code 2356 returns, the issue is in the wiring harness or TCU.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine for service

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery before beginning any electrical repairs.

  2. Locate the solenoid

Locate the transmission control valves. On some Magnum models, the solenoids are found between the fuel tank and the transmission housing. The C5-6 clutch solenoid is often the third solenoid down from the top in a bank of four speed-clutch solenoids. Refer to the specific service manual for your machine for the exact location and diagram.

  3. Repair wiring harness

If diagnostics confirm a wiring fault, carefully repair the damaged section of the harness, ensuring to properly insulate the repaired wires. Replace the harness section if damage is extensive.

  4. Replace C5-6 clutch solenoid

If diagnostics confirm the solenoid is at fault, replace the C5-6 clutch solenoid (PWM type).

  5. Reassemble components

Reconnect all connectors, ensuring they are clean, dry, and securely seated.

  6. Clear codes and calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and use the diagnostic menu to clear the stored error codes. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure to ensure smooth engagement.

  7. Verify repair

Operate the tractor and put the transmission through its gears to confirm that the fault code does not return and that shifting is smooth.
