New Holland 2413 – TCM: Synchronizer Disengaged Without Control Module Control

Issue description

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected movement in a synchronizer assembly that it did not initiate. This indicates a discrepancy in the position feedback system caused by a faulty synchronizer potentiometer or wiring issue, or an unexpected mechanical movement such as worn shift forks or synchronizer collars. The controller registers this fault and disables the transmission to prevent potential damage.

Applies to these machines

  • T7.165
  • T7.170
  • T7.175
  • T7.190
  • T7.210
  • TM Series
  • TM120
  • TM155
  • MXM Series
  • 8160
  • 8260
  • T6030
  • T6070
  • T6080
  • T6090
  • T6
  • M Series

Check the cause

  1. Cycle the shuttle lever from neutral to forward and reverse to see if the fault reoccurs, confirming if the issue is persistent

  2. Check the diagnostic display for other active fault codes, particularly potentiometer-related codes (e.g., F40-F45), to pinpoint the faulty circuit

  3. Identify if the fault occurs when shifting into a specific range (e.g., Low/High or Medium/Reverse) to narrow down which synchronizer and potentiometer to investigate

  4. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission potentiometers for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  5. Test the synchronizer potentiometer supply voltage (should be 8V with key on and harness connected)

  6. Test the synchronizer potentiometer resistance with a multimeter (resistance should change smoothly as the component moves; sudden jumps or drops to zero indicate a faulty potentiometer). For a Range Command Potentiometer, check specific values: Red/Green to Red/Yellow (1.8 kΩ at rest, 5.8 kΩ at full travel), Red/Green to Yellow/Green (5.6 kΩ at rest, 1.2 kΩ at full travel), and Red/Yellow to Yellow/Green (4.6 kΩ constant)

Repair steps

  1. Replace faulty potentiometer

If electrical testing confirms a faulty potentiometer (electrical/sensor cause), disconnect its wiring harness, remove the retaining bolts, and lift it off the transmission housing. Install the new potentiometer, ensuring it is seated correctly, and reconnect the harness.

  2. Perform transmission calibration

After replacing a potentiometer, perform a full transmission calibration procedure to ensure the control module learns the new potentiometer's position values.

  3. Access internal transmission components

If the potentiometer and wiring are functioning correctly (mechanical cause suspected), drain the transmission oil, split the tractor, and remove the relevant transmission housing section to access the synchronizer assemblies.

  4. Inspect and replace mechanical parts

Inspect the synchronizer hubs, rings, shift forks, and shift rails for signs of wear, breakage, or excessive movement. Replace any worn or damaged components.

  5. Reassemble and calibrate

Reassemble the transmission, ensuring all components are correctly aligned and torqued to specification. Refill with the correct transmission fluid and perform a full transmission calibration.
