3001

New Holland 3001 – ECU: Foot Throttle Position Discrepancy with Idle Switch State

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving conflicting signals from the accelerator pedal assembly. The data from the idle validation switch (indicating the pedal is at idle) does not match the data from the throttle position sensor (indicating the pedal is pressed), or vice-versa. This logical mismatch prevents the ECM from accurately determining the operator's intended throttle position, which may cause the engine to be restricted to low idle as a safety measure.

Applies to these machines

  • Workmaster 50
  • Workmaster 60
  • T4
  • T5
  • T6
  • T7
  • T8
  • T7000
  • T6010
  • T6020
  • Magnum 335
  • Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the foot throttle pedal assembly and the ECU for damage, corrosion, chafing, or loose connections

  2. Verify the sensor is receiving a 5-volt power supply at the appropriate pin on the throttle sensor connector

  3. Test the position potentiometer by measuring voltage between the signal and ground wires; it should increase smoothly from approximately 0.55V at idle to 4.15V at full throttle without jumps or dead spots

  4. Test the idle switch by measuring voltage between the signal wire and ground; it should read 0V at idle and jump to 5V when depressed slightly

  5. If the sensor and switch test correctly at the component, repeat voltage tests at the corresponding ECU connector pins to verify wiring harness integrity

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine for service

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn the engine off, and disconnect the battery before unplugging any major electrical connectors.

  2. Access foot throttle assembly

Remove floor mats or access panels in the cab as needed to reach the foot throttle assembly.

  3. Disconnect and test

Disconnect the electrical connector from the foot throttle sensor assembly and perform diagnostic voltage and resistance checks on the potentiometer and idle switch.

  4. Replace foot throttle assembly

If diagnostic tests pinpoint a failure in the foot throttle potentiometer or the idle switch, unbolt the old assembly from the cab floor and install a new one (typically replaced as a single unit).

  5. Reconnect and clear codes

Reconnect the electrical harness to the new sensor assembly and reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard diagnostics to clear the stored fault codes.

  6. Perform calibration

Access the tractor's diagnostic 'H' menu (e.g., H1) through the instrument cluster and follow on-screen prompts (which may include starting the engine and setting RPM) so the ECU can learn the new sensor's voltage range for idle and full throttle.
