New Holland 3024 – ECU: Atmospheric Pressure Sensor Signal Above Range Max

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the signal from the atmospheric pressure sensor is above the maximum expected range. The atmospheric pressure sensor measures ambient air pressure, which the ECM uses to adjust fuel delivery and engine parameters for optimal performance and emissions control at different altitudes. A signal that is too high indicates the voltage received exceeds the ECM's pre-defined upper limit. This condition may affect the engine's performance or diagnostic readings and is typically caused by a short circuit to power in the wiring harness, an internal sensor failure, or an issue with the ECM itself.

Applies to these machines

  • T4 Series
  • T5 Series
  • T6 Series
  • T7 Series
  • T8 Series
  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.330
  • T8.360
  • T8.390
  • T8.420
  • T9 Series
  • TG Series
  • TJ Series
  • FPT Engines

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the atmospheric pressure sensor and its wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion on connectors, or loose connections.

  2. Check for related fault codes (such as 3023) which could indicate a discrepancy between the atmospheric and boost pressure sensors.

  3. Verify the ECU power supply to the sensor by measuring for a steady 5.0 ± 0.16 VDC at the sensor's power pin.

  4. Measure the signal wire voltage with the engine off and running; a constant high voltage (close to 5V) indicates a short to power.

  5. Check wiring integrity for continuity on the ground wire, short circuits between the signal wire and power/ground, and infinite impedance between input and output terminals.

Repair steps

  1. Confirm the Fault

Using a diagnostic tool, confirm that fault code 3024 is active.

  2. Perform Diagnostic Checks

Follow the diagnostic checks listed above to rule out wiring or connection issues.

  3. Isolate the Sensor

If the wiring and connections are in good condition, the issue likely lies with the sensor itself.

  4. Replace the Atmospheric Pressure Sensor

Locate the sensor (often on the intake manifold or frame rail), disconnect the electrical connector, remove the old sensor, install the new sensor to manufacturer's specification, and reconnect the electrical connector.

  5. Clear Fault Codes

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code from the ECU's memory.

  6. Verify the Repair

Start the engine and let it run to ensure the fault code does not reappear. Check the live data from the sensor to confirm it is reading within the expected range.
