New Holland 3039 – ECM: Cruise Control Actuating Device Evaluation Error
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an evaluation error related to the cruise control actuating device, indicating a problem with the system's ability to perform its intended function. The ECM received an implausible signal, or no signal at all, from the cruise control activation system when a response was expected. This system includes operator switches, safety interlocks, and potentially an electromechanical actuator. The malfunction prevents the activation or maintenance of the cruise control or constant engine RPM functions and is typically caused by an electrical open circuit, a short circuit, or a mechanical failure.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- T8 Series
- T7000 Series
- T6000 Series
- TSA Series
- CR Series
- CX Series
- T7 Series
- MXM175
- TZ25DA
Check the cause
Verify operator actions: Ensure conditions for cruise control engagement are met (e.g., minimum speed achieved, no active braking or clutch inputs)
Check for related fault codes: Look for codes like 3038 (Constant Engine RPM Activate / Select Switch - Short circuit to Ground), or codes related to brake switches, speed sensors, and throttle position sensors
Inspect wiring and connectors: Visually check harnesses leading to armrest/console cruise control switches, brake/clutch pedal switches, and hydrostatic pedal electromagnets for damage, corrosion, or loose connections
Test the operator switches: Use a multimeter to test continuity of the rocker or push-button switch in all positions (on, off, set, resume). An open circuit when pressed or a short circuit indicates a failed switch
Test safety interlocks: Check the brake light switch for proper operation, as a faulty switch can send a constant 'disengage' signal
Check the actuator (if equipped): On models with a hydrostatic pedal electromagnet, check for power and ground at the magnet when cruise control is activated. If power is present but it does not engage, the magnet has failed
Repair steps
Retrieve all fault codes
Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or onboard diagnostics to confirm 3039 is the primary fault and identify any related codes pointing to a specific root cause.
Isolate the faulty component
Perform the diagnostic checks on switches, wiring, interlocks, and actuators to determine the exact point of failure.
Replace faulty operator switch (if applicable)
Disconnect the battery. Remove necessary console or armrest trim. Disconnect the electrical connector, release retaining tabs, and remove the switch. Install the new switch, reconnect wiring and trim, and reconnect the battery.
Replace faulty brake switch (if applicable)
Disconnect the battery. Locate the switch near the top of the brake pedal arm. Disconnect the connector, unthread/unclip from the bracket, and install the new switch. Adjust it to activate properly when the pedal is pressed, then reconnect.
Replace faulty electromagnet (if applicable)
Disconnect the battery. Locate the electromagnet on the throttle or hydrostatic pedal linkage. Disconnect wiring, unbolt from the mounting bracket, install the new magnet, and reconnect.
Clear codes and test
Clear all fault codes from the ECM. Operate the machine to verify that the cruise control engages and disengages correctly and that the fault code does not return.
