3061

New Holland 3061 – ECU: Cylinder 1 – Injector Cable Short Circuit (Low Side To Battery)

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a short circuit in the wiring for the cylinder 1 fuel injector. Specifically, the low-voltage control wire of the injector circuit is electrically shorted to a positive battery voltage source. This condition prevents proper operation of the injector, potentially causing it to stay open or closed, which results in engine misfires, rough running, and excessive smoke.

Applies to these machines

  • T7 Series
  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T7.260
  • T7.270
  • T8 Series
  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.330
  • T8.350
  • T8.410
  • T9 Series
  • TG Series
  • TG215
  • TG275

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the cylinder 1 fuel injector for chafing, melting, or cuts in the insulation.

  2. Examine the electrical connector at the cylinder 1 injector for corrosion, bent or broken pins, and ensure a secure connection.

  3. Trace the injector harness back to the main engine harness and ECU to check for rubbing against engine components or visible damage.

  4. Perform a short-to-power test: Disconnect the injector harness, turn ignition ON (engine off), and test both pins to ground with a multimeter. The low-side wire should show close to 0 volts; battery voltage confirms a short circuit to power.

  5. Perform an injector coil resistance test: Measure resistance across the two pins on the disconnected fuel injector. Expect 12-16 ohms; significantly lower/higher readings or an open circuit indicate a faulty injector.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the fault

Determine if the short circuit lies within the wiring harness or the ECU. Address any visible wiring issues first before attempting advanced ECU pin testing.

  2. Repair or replace wiring

If visible damage is found on the injector wiring harness, repair it using appropriate splice connectors and heat-shrink tubing. If damage is extensive or close to the connector, replace the injector harness or connector pigtail.

  3. Replace the fuel injector (if faulty)

If the injector coil resistance is out of specification, replace the injector. Clean the area, disconnect lines, and remove the hold-down bolt (use a puller if necessary). Install the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and lubricated O-ring. Torque injector bolts to 9 Nm + 75 degrees, fuel tube nut to 50 Nm, and harness nuts to 1.5 Nm (typical for FPT engines with Bosch injectors).

  4. Clear codes and verify repair

Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code. Operate the machine to ensure the code does not return and the engine runs smoothly.
