3065

New Holland 3065 – ECU: Cylinder 5 - Injector Cable Short Circuit (Low Side To Battery)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an electrical anomaly, specifically a short circuit to the battery in the low voltage circuit, for the cylinder 5 fuel injector. This indicates a problem with the electrical signal controlling the injector rather than a mechanical failure of the injector itself. To prevent engine damage, the ECU will typically disable the affected injector, which can lead to engine misfires, rough idling, increased fuel consumption, and reduced power.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness leading to the cylinder 5 fuel injector for chafing, melting, or damaged insulation.

  2. Check for corrosion or damage at both the injector connector and the ECU connector.

  3. Use a diagnostic tool to check for any other active or stored fault codes related to injector circuits or ECU power supply.

  4. Disconnect the wiring harness from the cylinder 5 injector and check for voltage on both pins with the key 'ON'. One wire should have battery voltage and the low-side control wire should have close to zero volts (if both show battery voltage, a short is likely).

  5. With the injector and ECU disconnected, test the wiring harness for continuity on the low-side control wire between the ECU and injector connector pins.

  6. Test for a short to power by measuring resistance between the low-side control wire and a known good 12V power source (resistance should be infinite).

  7. Measure the resistance across the two terminals of the cylinder 5 fuel injector and compare it to a functioning injector to rule out an internal injector fault.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Disconnect the battery before beginning any repair work on the electrical system to prevent further damage or injury.

  2. Isolate the Fault

Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the fault is in the wiring harness, the injector connector, or the injector itself.

  3. Repair or Replace Wiring

If a damaged section of the wiring harness is found, carefully repair it using OEM-grade materials. Ensure all connections are properly soldered and sealed with heat-shrink tubing to protect against moisture and vibration. If the damage is extensive or near a connector, replacing the entire engine or injector wiring harness is the most reliable solution.

  4. Replace the Injector (If Necessary)

If the diagnostic tests point to an internal failure of the injector, it must be replaced. It is often recommended to replace the injector seal and hold-down bolt at the same time.

  5. Clear Fault Codes

Once the repair is complete, reconnect the battery and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code 3065 from the ECU's memory.

  6. Verify the Repair

Start the engine and let it run to ensure that the fault code does not reappear and that the engine is operating smoothly.
