3066

New Holland 3066 – ECU: Injector Solenoid Valve Cylinder 5 - Source Low

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a low voltage or insufficient current in the electrical circuit for the fuel injector solenoid on cylinder number 5. This indicates that the signal or power source is low, often due to a short circuit to ground or a wiring issue. This prevents the injector from receiving the correct electrical signal to operate properly, which can result in engine misfires, rough running, reduced power, and increased smoke.

Applies to these machines

  • T8 Series
  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.330
  • T8.360
  • T8.390
  • T7 Series
  • Combines
  • 8160
  • 8260
  • 8360
  • 8560
  • TM Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the number 5 fuel injector for chafing, rubbing against engine components, heat damage, or pinched wires.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the number 5 injector and check for corrosion, bent or loose pins, and moisture intrusion. Ensure the connector is clean and makes a secure connection when re-seated.

  3. Measure the injector coil resistance across its two terminals (specification for some FPT injectors is 0.56 to 0.57 Ohms). A very low reading indicates a short within the injector coil.

  4. Check for a short to ground by testing for continuity between the injector 5 signal wire and chassis ground with the injector and ECU disconnected (there should be no continuity).

  5. Perform a noid light test at the injector harness connector to verify if the ECU is sending a pulse signal during cranking.

  6. Swap the number 5 injector with another cylinder (e.g., cylinder 4) and run the engine to see if the fault code follows the injector (indicating a faulty injector) or stays with cylinder 5 (indicating a wiring or ECU issue).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect batteries

Disconnect the vehicle's batteries before beginning any electrical repair work.

  2. Access the injector

Remove engine covers, air intake piping, or other components as necessary to gain access to the fuel rail and the number 5 injector.

  3. Perform diagnostic checks

Follow the diagnostic steps outlined in the section above to pinpoint the root cause (wiring, connector, or the injector itself).

  4. Repair wiring harness

If a wiring fault or short to ground was found during diagnostics, repair the damaged section using appropriate sealed connectors and heat shrink. Secure the harness away from sharp edges or hot components.

  5. Replace fuel injector

If the injector is determined to be faulty, thoroughly clean the area around the injector before removal to prevent dirt from entering the cylinder. Disconnect the fuel line and electrical connector, remove the hold-down clamp or bolt, and carefully extract the old injector. Ensure the injector bore is clean before installing the new component. Install the new injector with any new seals or O-rings as required. Torque the hold-down clamp to the manufacturer's specification. Reconnect the fuel line and electrical connector.

  6. Perform post-repair calibration

Reconnect the batteries and clear all stored fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Perform an injector reset or calibration procedure if required by the system to ensure the ECU recognizes the new component and the engine performs optimally.

  7. Verify repair

Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and allow the engine to run to verify that fault code 3066 does not return.
